Hair and Humidity

March 2022

While March may signify entering into the beautiful autumn season and the hot humid days should technically be coming to an end, we are quickly reminded that we live in tropical Queensland where any weather system may occur and the hot humid days are not just prone to the hot summer months.

If you suffer from the frustration of spending time and effort into straightening or curling your hair just to take a step out your front door where all that hard work vanishes in just a moment, you are not alone!

You may be asking yourself, WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN!!!

In a really simple answer – The Moisture in the air wants to create equilibrium (balance between forces). So those of us with chemically treated, heat styled and naturally dry hair are going to feel the effects of humidity more than others. The greater the difference between the moisture of your hair and the moisture in the air – the greater reaction will be. Humidity (moisture in the air) causes a change in the way the protein bundles that make up each strand of hair are bound together. There is no way to predict how much or where our hair decides to absorb the moisture, and this why it creates the unorganised differing bends, curls and shapes, causing the frizzy mess that we find so frustrating.

So how do we deal with it?

A few ways we can reduce the frustration is simply by:

  • Embrace what you have. Wear those unruly waves and curls with pride or pop it up in a classic topknot! We’re all in this together!
  • Product. There are many lotions and potions on the market to help reduce the frizz factor. We love the REDKEN Frizz Dismiss. Reducing our Salon Footprint

October 2021

We care about the environment and are conscious of the impact we can have on it due to the type of waste we are exposed to within the salon. We have made the effort to do our part to help reduce our salon footprint by working together with some fabulous organisations who really make a difference in and for our world.

Did you know that we are a "Sustainable Salon"?

You may be wondering what that means exactly, so let me tell you a little bit about it.

Sustainable Salons is a organisation that takes ALL of our waste, diverts it from landfill, recycles it all into various forms all to reduce the salon footprint.

Our plastics are cleaned and up-cycled into new products.

Salon metals, including foils, and paper is sold for recycling with the proceeds donated to reputable organisations who feed people in need.

Hair collected from the salon floor is used to make "Hair Booms" that will one day help to protect our coastlines by assisting with the clean up of oil spills.

Ponytails longer than 20cm are donated to charitable organisations for the creation of wigs for those who suffer from Cancer or Alopecia.

Chemicals are collected, pooled and sent to chemical recycling plants where they are neutralised and turned into recycled water.

Select disposable hygiene products used during treatments are pulled apart and the materials are sent for re-purposing.

We purchase "Who Gives a Crap" toilet paper. "Who gives a crap" launched from learning a staggering 2.4 Billion people didn't have access to a toilet. This number has now reduced to 2 Billion - Hooray for Progress!!! They calculated that around 289,000 children under the age of 5 die every year from diarrhoeal diseases caused by poor water and sanitation (almost 800 per day). This wonderful organisation donate 50% of their profits to build toilets and improve sanitation in the developing countries.

Along with supporting these organisations, we also buy the delicious Urban Brew Coffee whose coffee pods/capsules are Biodegradable and the coffee is ethically sourced and freshly roasted locally.

I haven't cut my hair in SO long and it still isn't growing!

September 2021

I haven't cut my hair in SO long and it still hasn't grown!

Does this statement sound all too familiar?

Did you know that regular "trims" actually help your hair to grow?

But HOW? If your hair is always growing then why would cutting it help it to grow? Sometimes what we don't realise is, the damage being done on the ends of our hair hinders us from seeing our new growth.

We've all experienced those dreaded split ends once or twice right? (wink wink) You know, the little tears and little what balls on our hair strands? They are the culprit! And once that split end breaks off, whether it be the next time you brush your hair or heat styling, it creates another split end, causing the cycle to begin all over again.....

Split end = Breakage = New split end, repeat....

So, Let us help you grow your hair!

I'll say it again.... Regular "trims" actually help your hair to grow!

Here are some tips for your next "I wan't to grow my hair" trim.

1. Be Specific! Tell us a measurement to cut off or Let us know to take off the split ends and flyaway's. Combating those split ends earlier helps to prevent that frustrating breakage cycle.

2. Get a good trim regularly. Every 10 - 12 weeks. This gives your hair enough time to grow but also allows us to cut off those ends and help to keep them in the best condition and help prevent those split ends appearing.

3. Use a heat protectant. We can help you with these in the salon!

4. Avoid heat styling every day.

"Your hair is constantly growing, but it won't get any longer if it's continually breaking" - Ashlee Allen

High Lift Colour vs Bleach

August 2021

High-lift colour was invented to replace the use of Bleach for those who didn't want to bleach their hair, but it's not interchangeable with Bleach.

A regular permanent hair dye mixed with 30vol developer can lift 2-3 levels or, lighten hair from dark to blonde, but not platinum.

High-lift colour offers only a boost to lightening, equal to one extra level on top of what a regular permanent dye would do.

Even though you can lift your hair up to 4 levels using high-lift colour, you're limited to only using it on virgin (not chemically altered) hair because like other dyes, it will not lighten already dyed hair.

Colour does not lift colour and if you've dyed your hair, you will need to use hair colour remover and bleach to remove those unwanted pigments.

This means that you need to already be a natural blonde to use high-lift colour. If you apply a high-lift to brown hair, you will get orange.
